ScreenRec alternatives for Mac

ScreenRec’s shape is quick capture with an instant share link. What Mac apps fill that role — and what each trade is — by published prices.

Saksham Sharma2 min read

ScreenRec’s appeal is easy to understand: press a hotkey and capture or record, and a private share link lands on your clipboard almost before you let go. It’s the “capture and send it now” shape of tool. If you’re moving to a Mac — or just want a tool that fits better — here’s what fills that role — by published prices and installed sizes from our October 2026 scan. I make Snapbak, so read my row with extra suspicion.

What the ScreenRec shape needs

Before the alternatives, the job: fast hotkey capture, a link you can paste immediately, and screen recording alongside screenshots. Any replacement has to be judged on the time between “I saw something” and “they can see it.”

The Mac field

App Price Installed (Mac) The share story
Cap Free, open source; cloud tier 421 MB Capture, share links, open source
CleanShot X $35 one‑time (+$19/yr updates) 72 MB Uploads and links via Cloud Pro
Loom Free tier (25 videos, 5 min); Business $18/user/mo 1,009 MB Links first; comments and views on them
Snapbak Free early access; Pro planned at $69 ~15–20 MB Local files first; share links when you choose to upload

Cap — open source, with links

Free, open source, with a cloud tier for links. Cap is the Mac app closest to the ScreenRec shape — quick capture, instant sharing — and the one you can audit or self‑host. The trade: it’s the youngest app on this list, and polish varies by feature.

CleanShot X — the polished uploader

$35 one‑time plus $19 a year for updates. CleanShot X is quick from hotkey to capture, and its Cloud Pro tier turns screenshots and recordings into links. The recording side is the second job here — there’s no transcript editing and no auto‑zoom — so it fits if most of your shares are stills.

Loom — links, with a team around them

Loom’s whole product is the link: record, upload, share, and get comments and view counts. The Mac app installs at 1,009 MB, the free tier caps at 25 five‑minute videos per person, and Business runs $18 per user per month (published pricing). Your recordings live on Loom’s cloud by design — that’s the product, and the trade.

Snapbak — local first, links on purpose

Free for the first 100 users; Pro planned at $69 one‑time. Snapbak flips the default: everything stays on your disk, and share links at snapbak.site/v/… are coming as an opt‑in feature — planned, like meeting capture, with the changelog saying so first. What ships today around the share story: polished screen recording with auto‑zoom, screenshots with OCR, Smart Redact, GIF exports sized for the issue or the chat, and offline English dictation — in a ~15–20 MB installer.

How to choose

  • Team links with comments and views: Loom.
  • Local files, share links when you opt in, and the rest of the capture job in one app: Snapbak. The full comparison table has the row‑by‑row detail.
